This photograph shows Samuel Austin Kingman, (1818-1904), copied from the book "History of Kansas" by Noble L. Prentis. He was appointed justice to the Kansas Supreme Court and served from 1861 to 1876. During his career Kingman was a member of the Wyandotte Convention of 1859. In 1861, when Kanas was admitted as a state, he was nominated as a justice to the Kansas Supreme Court. He was re-elected in 1867 and served for 6 years before retiring in 1876. Kingman also served as president of the Kansas State Historical Society and the Kansas State Bar Association. As a lasting legacy to his accomplishments, Kingman County, Kansas, was named in his honor.
