This photograph of a painting shows Samuel Austin Kingman, (1818-1904). He was appointed justice to the Kansas Supreme Court and served from 1861 to 1876. During his career Kingman was a member of the Wyandotte Convention of 1859. In 1861, when Kanas was admitted as a state, he was nominated as a justice to the Kansas Supreme Court. He was re-elected in 1867 and served for 6 years before retiring in 1876. Kingman also served as president of the Kansas State Historical Society and the Kansas State Bar Association. As a lasting legacy to his accomplishments, Kingman County, Kansas, was named in his honor.
