This photograph shows one of the 3rd grade classes at Douglass School (Third Ward School) in Kansas City, Kansas.
Douglass School began as the Third Ward school in 1887, located at 9th and Freeman, to accommodate the growing African American population of Kansas City, Kansas. It was the second African American school in Wyandotte county. The school has had four different locations over the years. This photo is believed to have been taken at the second location, on Washington Boulevard between 9th and 10th Streets. At this time, the name was changed from Third Ward to Douglass in honor of Frederick Douglass. This would have been the location during the years that Charles "Yardbird" Parker attended as an elementary student. In the present day, the school is still open to fourth and fifth grade students.
