This photograph shows William M. Boular, (1869-1953), copied from "American Magazine." Born in the small town of Summer, Kansas he later moved with his family to Atchison, Kansas. As a young child Boular was faced with some medical challenges. At the age of four he suffered from spinal meningitis leaving him unable able to speak or hear. When Boular was ten he lost his legs below the knees due to a railroad accident that severed his legs because he wasn't able to hear the train's whistle. These limitations did not keep Boular from an active life. He wore special designed and fitted shoes to walk on. As soon as he was able to do so, he secured employment. For thirty-five years he worked at the local foundry paving streets and sidewalks and was know as the "hardest worker" in Atchison, Kansas . In 1900 he was recognized as a champion bricklayer for laying 46,000 bricks in an eight hour day. Some years later in 1933, Boular was recognized for his outstanding work in Ripley's "Believe It Or Not". In his leisure time he was a beekeeper and an avid hunter. He passed away on January 06, 1953 at the age eighty-three in Atchison.
