This photograph shows Hamilton Perkins Cady, (1874-1943), copied from the University of Kansas' "The Graduate Magazine." Born in the small town of Skiddy, Kansas near Council Grove, Kansas, Cady became a prominent chemist and educator. In 1897 he earned a Bachelor of Arts, and in 1903 a PhD both from the University of Kansas. Cady taught chemistry with an emphasis in "liquid air" at the University of Kansas from 1899-1943. He inspired his students to discover the potentials in chemistry through experimentation and observation. These science methods led Cady and fellow colleague Dr. David McFarland, in 1905, to follow their teachings and propose a hypothesis. After analyzing more than 40 samples of natural gas; they found helium was present. This historical finding changed the science world. This chemical element could be extracted as a by product of natural gas. Helium goes on to play an important role in the United States Government's space, defense, and energy programs." Cade carried on with his analytical research in helium until he passed away in 1943, at the age of sixty-nine, in Lawerence, Kansas.
