This photograph shows Daniel Read Anthony Jr., (1870-1931), newspaper publisher, Kansas politician, civic leader, and nephew of suffragist Susan B. Anthony. As the son of newspaper editor and publisher of the Leavenworth Times, Daniel Read Anthony, and Annie Osborn Anthony he had a strong sense of commitment to the city of Leavenworth, Kansas. Anthony served as appointed postmaster of the city, from 1898-1902, and served as mayor from 1903-1905. With his father's death in 1904, Anthony became manager and editor of the Leavenworth Times. As he wrote about the issues and concerns of the community, his interest turned to politics. In 1907 Anthony "was elected without opposition to fill the unexpired term of Charles Curtis" in the U.S. House of Representatives serving the Kansas' first congressional district. Curtis had resigned his seat earlier to enter the United States Senate. Anthony would go on to win the 1908 general election to the house of representatives and was elected to nine consecutive terms from 1907 to 1929. During his term as a congressman, Anthony introduced a number of legislations, including the 1909 proposal to build a military road from Fort Leavenworth to Fort Riley. The bill passed through Congress for the construction of the 130-mile road. The road is known today as Kansas Highway K-92. Anthony closed out his political career in 1928, choosing not to seek re-election and returning to private life. On August 4, 1931, Anthony passed away at the age of sixty-one in Leavenworth, Kansas.
