A letter on May 21, 1877, from Eli Gilbert, states he has heard there is likely to be a vacancy in the Medical department and says he has a friend who is skilled in this area who he'd like to recommend. A letter on January 18, 1877, from L. W. Howell, applies for the appointment as Deputy Warden of the Penitentiary. A letter of recommendation from O. A. Bassett for S. W. Howell as Deputy Warden. Additional correspondence in this file pertains to the appointments of Director and Deputy Warden of the Penitentiary.
