This photograph shows Ellen May Stanley, (1921-2022), a historian and author from Dighton, Kansas. She authored several books about Lane County history including Early Lane County Development, 12,000 B.C. - A.D. 1994. Ellen also wrote an ongoing column for the Dighton Hearld newspaper marking events from 100 years ago in Lane County. Recognized as an accomplished local and state historian, Ellen also served on a number of civic organizations that included: the Democratic State Affirmative Action Committee, 1962-1986, and Kansans Against the Vietnam War. In 1982 she was elected to the board of the Kansas Historical Foundation. A few years later, in 1987, Ellen was elected to the executive committee of the foundation and eventually served as president from 1989-1990. Ellen May Stanley passed away on August 28, 2022 in Dighton, Kansas at the age of 101.
