Barrell from Chemical Corporation of Colorado

This black and white photograph taken at the Armstrong Air Service in Scott City, Kansas, shows the top of a barrel containing Colorado.44 25% DDT. The emulsifiable concentrated chemical was manufactured by the Chemical Corporation of Colorado in Denver. The spray from the barrel was found to be adulterated with 2.76% 2,4 - D. It had been used to spray a sugar beet field that contained garden webworm.

Articles of particular interest include two articles on "raging dusters," one on the winter wheat crop, and a brief article discussing the postponement of community meetings to distribute aid under the soil erosion program. The newspaper also includes articles about other newsworthy events occurring in Garden City and around the state of Kansas.

This photograph shows a man standing in front of the Colorado, Kansas & Oklahoma Railroad Company offices in Scott City, Kansas. The rail line ran between Garden City, Kansas and Wiona, Kansas. In 1917 financial difficulties forced the rail line to cease operation. The tracks were later removed and use for World War efforts.

Council of National Defense Woman's Committee correspondence

This collection consists of correspondence between individuals and committee members to the state chair of the Woman's Committee of the Kansas Council of National Defense. The Council of National Defense was established at the federal level in 1916 as an emergency agency under the Army Appropriation Act and abolished in 1921. It was created in reaction to World War I to coordinate resources and industries for national defense and improve civilian morale. The Woman's Committee of the Kansas Council of National Defense performed the same functions at the state and local levels, coordinating women's activities for national defense. The materials are organized alphabetically by county. The digitization of this collection was paid for through the Margot R. Swovelan Endowment Fund.

A letter from O. P. Reeve writes to Kansas Governor St. John to inform him that the counties of Scott, Lane, Wichita, and Greeley are unorganized but also unattached and are without protection. He asks the Governor how to acquire a copy of the "Code of Kansas".

These letters, spanning 1886, are from the residents and offices of Scott County, Kansas regarding its organization to Kansas Governor John Martin. Many of the letters are signed petitions confirming the population requirements are met for its organization. There are Governor's Proclamations electing an official to verify the requirements as well as claiming the official organization of the county. Other letters discuss the appointment of a census taker, register of deeds, and probate judge. Scott County was organized on June 29, 1886 and named for General Winfield Scott.

El Quartelejo Monument Scott County, Kansas

This black and white photograph shows a view of the El Quartelejo Monument in Scott City, Kansas. This site located north of Scott City, Kansas and along Ladder Creek inside the Lake Scott State Park, is the archeological remains of a Indian pueblo. A group of Taos Indians migrated to the region from New Mexico around 1664 to escape Spanish oppression and to live among the Plains Apache Indians. To honor this historical area, a granite marker was erected in 1925 by the Kansas Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. In 1964, the ruins were recognized as a National Historic Landmark. The ruins are deteriorating and are considered a "at risk" site.

This section contains compiled statistics from the 1905 Kansas decennial census but individuals are not listed. A general index starts on page 61 of the Decennial Census section at the back of the volume.

This biennial report covers the years 1885-86. The volume contains two parts and the page numbering starts over at the beginning of part II. The volume contains numerous agricultural statistics and information about other industries. It also contains information about Kansas weather, schools, churches, various agricultural issues such as Texas fever, chinch bugs, vacant public lands, etc. A major part of the volume is devoted to information gathered during the 1885 statewide census conducted by the Board of Agriculture. Part I contains a number of tables with statistics about Kansas residents broken down by county. Part I also contains a section on each county, providing summary information about the history of the county, nativity of residents, a description of the landscape, crops, livestock, schools, newspapers, banks, and a list of county officers for 1887. Proceedings and other activities of the Kansas State Board of Agriculture are in Part II.

Forrest Jeffries to the U.S. Department of Justice

Forrest Jeffries wrote to the U.S. Department of Justice concerning difficulties faced by Jehovah's Witnesses in Scott City, Kansas, beginning in June of 1942. According to Jeffries' account, the Scott City Jehovah's Witnesses were threatened with violence and told to stop handing out their magazines. Jeffries and several other Jehovah's Witnesses were taken to jail in order to keep them safe from mob violence.

Fred Robertson to Charles H. Sessions

Fred Robertson of the United State Attorney's Office, Kansas City, writes the secretary to Governor Arthur Capper, Charles H. Sessions in response to a letter he received. The letter acknowledges receipt of a letter from W. A. Lewis of Pence (Scott County), who is alarmed by the behavior of a German neighbor. During World War I, citizens suspicious of the patriotic allegiances of their neighbors often sent reports of such suspicions to the Governor. The Governor's Office often forwarded these reports to the United States District Attorney for investigation.

This collection consists of 326 photographs taken by G. C. (Golden Charles) Dresher of Canton, McPherson County, Kansas. The photos mostly concern the Dresher family, their friends and the surrounding area. Photographs of McPherson College students and the flooding of Cow Creek are also included. Dorothy May (Dresher) Richards, the daughter of G. C. Dresher, donated the original glass plate negatives to the Kansas Historical Society in 1999.
