The letters discuss the appraisal of the Salt Spring lands and include a report of the appraisement. The Salt Spring lands were located in Saline, Lincoln, Mitchell, Cloud, and Republic counties.

Bert Floyd Rathbun journal

Bert Floyd Rathbun documented a trip he and his family made by covered wagon to Wyoming to visit his brother Martin Oliver Rathbun. Rathbun's father, John Russell Rathbun, suffered from asthma, and his doctor suggested he try living in a drier climate. The Rathbuns left Simpson, Kansas, on August 14, 1909, and traveled to St. Francis, Kansas, where they wintered. On May 5, 1910, they started their trip west. He kept the journal in a "Farmers Pocket Ledger" provided by the Deere & Mansur Company of Moline, Illinois. There is information about the company's products and agricultural information in the ledger.

Bert Hart of the Beloit, Kansas baseball team

William Bert Hart is pictured here as a member of the 1920 Beloit Leaguers baseball team. With Hart as its regular shortstop and occasional pitcher, the Leaguers claimed the "independent state championship of Kansas" that year. Bert Hart was a well-known semi-professional baseball player in northern Kansas during the 1910s and early 1920s. He played not only for Beloit, but also for semi-pro teams in Green and Clay Center, as well as the Westmoreland town team. Hart spent most of his work career employed at the post office in Westmoreland; he and his wife Margaret also operated a hotel and restaurant there for several years during the 1940s.

Broken Star quilt

Blue, white and pink cotton quilt in Broken Star pattern, with close and fine quilting overall. The binding is marked with the initials "M E T" on the back. According to the donor, the quilt belonged to her uncle's parents, Eugene and Annie Elizabeth Carmichael Metzger. They were married in Missouri in 1880 and moved to Hunter, Mitchell County, Kansas and then later to Lane, Franklin County, Kansas. The quilt may have been part of Annie Metzger's hope chest.

Clark Allen Smith

This photograph of a painting shows Clark Allen Smith, (1846-1921). He was appointed justice to the Kansas Supreme Court serving from 1904 to 1915. During his career Smith also served as the judge of the 15th district of Kansas and taught at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas.

Council of National Defense Woman's Committee correspondence

This collection consists of correspondence between individuals and committee members to the state chair of the Woman's Committee of the Kansas Council of National Defense. The Council of National Defense was established at the federal level in 1916 as an emergency agency under the Army Appropriation Act and abolished in 1921. It was created in reaction to World War I to coordinate resources and industries for national defense and improve civilian morale. The Woman's Committee of the Kansas Council of National Defense performed the same functions at the state and local levels, coordinating women's activities for national defense. The materials are organized alphabetically by county. The digitization of this collection was paid for through the Margot R. Swovelan Endowment Fund.

A letter from the Commissioners, Sheriff, District Court, and Register of Deeds for the County of Mitchell writes to Kansas Governor St. John to recommend a person they believe would be suitable to fill the Office of County Surveyor. The following is a resignation letter for County Surveyor, in this letter is a recommendation for a certain person to fill said position. A separate letter informs the Governor that the people of Mitchell County are concerned about not getting enough rain for their crops and provides a petition for an extension of time to pay the annual interest to the state.
