Aaron Zadik was received at the Kansas State Penitentiary on January 1, 1900 from Oklahoma for larceny and escaping prison. Inmate Daul Mans was received at the penitentiary on February 10, 1898 from Elk County, Kansas for rape.

An interior view of an early bowling alley owned by L.F. Roberts in Howard, Kansas. Three bowling lanes are pictured. Partially visible is a sign with rules governing the behavior of patrons, advising them to "keep back of foul line." Other rules are not completely visible, but appear to warn against gambling and excessive noise.

The first bowling alley in Howard is pictured in this photograph. Two bowling lanes are pictured, with two men in the shadows behind the pins in each lane. The décor suggests a patriotic theme, with the display of four flags and bunting with a star design. Three handwritten signs are posted prominently: "No Swearing or Betting"; "Ladies are Welcome at Anytime"; and, "No Gentleman Will Spit on the Floor." As noted in the caption inscribed on the photo, the business was owned by L.F. Roberts.

Caplock Hammer from 14EK301

This hammer from a caplock gun was recovered from an Early Ceramic village with a historic period presence in Elk County. The caplock gun hammer replaced the flintlock firing system . The hammer struck a percussion cap and set off a charge. This artifact was donated to the Kansas Historical Society in 1975.

This pipe fragment was recovered from the surface of a multicomponent (multiple occupations) site in Elk County and donated to the Kansas Historical Society in 1975. This historic period artifact has a faint mark, perhaps a maker's mark, on one side of the stem.

Inmate Ezra McLinn was received at the Kansas State Penitentiary on October 11, 1900 from Elk County, Kansas for escaping prison. Varient spelling of his surname includes McLin.

Council of National Defense Woman's Committee correspondence

This collection consists of correspondence between individuals and committee members to the state chair of the Woman's Committee of the Kansas Council of National Defense. The Council of National Defense was established at the federal level in 1916 as an emergency agency under the Army Appropriation Act and abolished in 1921. It was created in reaction to World War I to coordinate resources and industries for national defense and improve civilian morale. The Woman's Committee of the Kansas Council of National Defense performed the same functions at the state and local levels, coordinating women's activities for national defense. The materials are organized alphabetically by county. The digitization of this collection was paid for through the Margot R. Swovelan Endowment Fund.

These letters, spanning the month of June 1887, are from the residents and offices of Elk County, Kansas regarding the office of probate judge to Kansas Governor John Martin. A couple letters state the current probate judge, Nathan Davis, was charged with forgery and a certified signed petition documents the vacancy in the office of probate judge. The rest of the letters recommend candidates for the position. There is also a newspaper clipping that lists all the candidates. Many candidates received signed petitions endorsing them for probate judge. Elk County was organized on March 25, 1875 and named for the Elk River.

This letter, dated May 25, 1867, is from Howard County Kansas officials and residents regarding the county's affairs to Kansas Governor Samuel Crawford. The signed official petition requests the organization of the county. Howard County was organized in 1867 and later split into the Elk and Chautauqua counties in 1875.

A letter on February 2, 1874, from Kansas Governor Osborn, appoints Thomas Chester as Special Aid to accompany and assist Attorney General Williams in the process of executing the law in Howard County. A letter on January 28, 1874, from Eli Titus, requests the Governor or someone from his staff to assist in securing the county records and to enforce the civil law. Several documents pertain to the matter of Howard County, such as an article from Judge W. P. Campbell granting an injunction, a report from the Sheriff, District Clerk, and the Deputy County Attorney of Howard County. Additional documents also pertain to the disturbances of Howard County, Kansas.
