This 1859 abstract of census returns shows information at the township level for most Kansas counties. Some counties are listed without data. The census lists the number of voters in three different ways--the number of votes cast June 7, 1859; number of voters on June 7, 1859 who were under 6 month provision; and number of voters under 3 month provision. It also lists the number of inhabitants. The election on June 7, 1859, was to elect delegates to the Wyandotte constitutional convention.

Albert Chapman Ellithorpe
Date: Between 1861 and 1865
This black and white photograph shows Albert Chapman Ellithorpe wearing a military uniform, (1824-1907). A commander of Union forces during the Civil War, he recruited and organized with the 12th Illinois Cavalry. His duties quickly changed when President Abraham Lincoln appointed him in 1862, to serve as Lieutenant in the First Indian Home Guards Regiment. The volunteer infantry regiment, organized on May 22, 1862 in Le Roy, Kansas, was comprised of whites, refugee Creek and Seminole Indians, and African Americans. The regiment served mostly in the Indian Territory but ventured into Kansas, Missouri, and Arkansas. Lieut. Ellithorpe and his regiment fought in a number of battles and skirmishes from Prairie Grove to Willow Springs. He and his men also followed Confederate General Sterling Price through western Missouri. After the war, he engaged in the business of heavy contracting and the inventions of mechanical devices. One of the inventions that he is best known for is the air brake system used in elevators. On February 19, 1907, Albert Chapman Ellithorpe passed away at the age of eighty-three.

Albert D. Searl's surveying chain

Brass and steel surveying chain. Albert D. Searl used this chain to survey town sites in Kansas Territory. He came to Kansas from Massachusetts in 1854. He apparently was associated with S.C. Pomeroy, agent for the New England Emigrant Aid Company that organized antislavery settlements in the territory. Searl laid out the city limits and streets of Lawrence, Kansas, in September 1854, and three months later conducted the first regular survey of Topeka. Later he surveyed Manhattan, Osawatomie, Burlington, El Dorado, and other Kansas towns.

Solid brass Vernier transit on walnut tripod. Albert D. Searl used this transit to survey town sites in Kansas Territory. He came to Kansas from Massachusetts in 1854. Championship of Woman

This pamphlet contains excerpts from and/or newspaper accounts of thirty speeches that George Francis Train, a supporter of women's rights, gave in Kansas over a two week period in October and November of 1867. Train came to Kansas after participating in an excursion to the Rocky Mountains with approximately 200 newspapermen to hunt buffalo. Numerous Kansas women's suffrage supporters are mentioned in the booklet. Train gave speeches in Leavenworth, Lawrence, Olathe, Paola, Ottawa, Mound City, Fort Scott, LeRoy, Humboldt, Burlington, Emporia, Junction City, Topeka, Atchison, Wyandotte, and possibly other communities. Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were also campaigning in Kansas and shared the podium and/or communicated with Train. Train was an author, speaker, and a celebrity for his eccentricity.

Around 1919, the Kansas State Historical Society and the American Legion solicited biographical information from returning veterans (primarily members of the 35th and 89th infantry divisions) and the families of those who died in service, notably from the Gold Star Mothers. Each veteran or family member was asked to provide letters, photographs, a biography, and military records.
