Augustine Joseph "Gus" Bellport

This photograph shows Augustine Joseph "Gus" Bellport, ( 1845-1933), from LaCrosse, Kansas seated on a horses at a unidentified location. Bellport was a cowboy and rancher. In 1867, he served as a wagon master from Fort Leavenworth to Medicine Lodge during the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty. From 1869-1870, Bellport raised beef cattle for soldiers near Fort Hays. In 1870, he went to Ellsworth County to work as a foreman on a cattle ranch. In 1873, Bellport began ranching near Rush Center and later moved to LaCrosse, Kansas where he engaged in various business ventures. He was also involved in the 1893 Oklahoma Cherokee Strip Land Rush. This photo shows his saddle that was purchased in San Antonio, Texas in 1867 and was used in cattle drives over the Old Chisholm Trail. As a legacy to his profession and career, his family donated the saddle to the Kansas State Historical Society in 1933.

Automobile Tax Unfair

The two letters and one reply by Governor Capper's office suggests either a decrease in automobile tax or to remove the tax completely. Governor Capper's response says that it is a legislative matter and at the time of the correspondence there is no repeal for the automobile tax law. This file is part of a bigger collection of Governor Arthur Capper correspondence.

A letter from J. B. Hazleton writes to Kansas Governor St. John to ask that he request from the Kansas State Legislature to pass a law that carries unpaid state taxes over another year. He explains in his letter that the entire crops in Rush County have been a failure.

These letters, spanning 1887 to 1888, are from the residents and offices of Rush County, Kansas regarding county affairs to Kansas Governor John Martin. A couple of letters discuss the Statue of Liberty and the appointment of probate judge. The rest of the letters discuss the county seat, particularly the location of it. Rush County was organized on December 5, 1874 and named for Alexander Rush, Captain of Company H, Second Colored Cavalry, killed at Jenkins Ferry, Arkansas, in April, 1864.

This section contains compiled statistics from the 1905 Kansas decennial census but individuals are not listed. This biennial report covers the years 1885-86. The volume contains two parts and the page numbering starts over at the beginning of part II. The volume contains numerous agricultural statistics and information about other industries. It also contains information about Kansas weather, schools, churches, various agricultural issues such as Texas fever, chinch bugs, vacant public lands, etc. A major part of the volume is devoted to information gathered during the 1885 statewide census conducted by the Board of Agriculture. Part I contains a number of tables with statistics about Kansas residents broken down by county. Part I also contains a section on each county, providing summary information about the history of the county, nativity of residents, a description of the landscape, crops, livestock, schools, newspapers, banks, and a list of county officers for 1887. Proceedings and other activities of the Kansas State Board of Agriculture are in Part II.

Garver Flying Circus

This black and white photograph shows members of the Garver Flying Circus in La Cross, Kansas. Kneeling from left to right: J.O. Lewis, Geo. Ellers, Karl Garver, Ralph Anderson, J.M. Moellendick, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Martin (?), Bertha and Cyle Horchem. The Garver Flying Circus, established around 1920 or 1921, by Karl Garver from Attica, Kansas and Cyle Horchem and ex-army flyer from Ransom, Kansas, performed spectacular aerial stunts across the Kansas sky. The group of daredevils successfully entertained the crowds of spectators with death defying acts until tragedy struck in 1924. On March 2, Bertha Horchem fell to her death during a loop stunt in San Antonio, Texas. On October 12, Ruth Garver "Champion Lady Parachute Jumper", fell to her death from one thousand feet in the air with a tangled parachute. Later that same year on November 12, Cyle Horchem slipped and fell to his death as he attempted to climb onto a wing while in flight. Karl Garver continued to perform at air shows but eventually sold his airplanes and died of alcohol poisoning in 1926.
