Oak desk chair with a blond finish, made by the Abernathy Furniture Company of Leavenworth, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri. LaVern Clair Noyes of Osborne acquired the chair from the Larosh Family of Osborne County, possibly in trade for services. Noyes was a custom harvester who also sold insurance and real estate.

Around 1919, the Kansas State Historical Society and the American Legion solicited biographical information from returning veterans (primarily members of the 35th and 89th infantry divisions) and the families of those who died in service, notably from the Gold Star Mothers. Each veteran or family member was asked to provide letters, photographs, a biography, and military records. This file contains information on Albert Nelson, 353rd Infantry, Machine Gun Company, 89th Division.

Inmate James Morrissey was received at the penitentiary on May 26, 1899 from Osborne County, Kansas for burglary and larceny.

In this telegram, business men and property owners from several Kansas communities plead with the governor to issue a proclamation to resume traffic on all rail lines operated by the Missouri Pacific Railway Company during the railroad strike of 1886.

Kidney-shaped metal filter canteen dating from the Civil War. Sergeant William W. Dimond used this canteen during his service with Co. G of the 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry. Dimond had this canteen with him when he was injured at Malvern Hill, Virginia. He was discharged in 1863 and eventually moved to Downs, Kansas.

Date: 1888
Child's dress made of heavy blue fabric. Trimmed with fluted pleat ruffles and plaid shirring. Worn by Bertha Luzette Garman (1878-1974) in about 1888. She was born to George Wilson and Amanda Elizabeth (Zeigler) Garman in Bristol, Indiana. When she was three months old, the family homesteaded the Kill Creek area of Osborne County, where here farther worked as a carpenter. She and her sister attended the "Little Stoney" country school until high school, when they transferred to Osborne High School. In 1905 she married Ulysses George Hibbs.

Child's cotton quilt in a unique design featuring red appliquéd hands on white ground. Made by Amanda Ziegler Garman for her daughter, Bertha. The appliqué pattern was made by tracing Bertha's hand. The family immigrated to Kill Creek, Kansas, from Bristol, Indiana, shortly after Bertha was born in 1878. Sashing strips are pieced of tiny red triangles on white ground. White cotton binding and backing. Batting is probably cotton. Hand-appliqued, hand-pieced, and machine-quilted in geometric designs.

This file includes a letter from Mrs. Martin Kenyon of Downs, Kansas. Topics discussed, but not limited to, in the correspondence is a chiropractor who was practicing without a license who is no longer practicing but Kenyon feels he should be allowed to continuing practicing from a personal testimony. This is part of a bigger collection of Governor Arthur Capper correspondence.

Council of National Defense Woman's Committee correspondence

Council of National Defense Woman's Committee correspondence

This collection consists of correspondence between individuals and committee members to the state chair of the Woman's Committee of the Kansas Council of National Defense. The Council of National Defense was established at the federal level in 1916 as an emergency agency under the Army Appropriation Act and abolished in 1921. It was created in reaction to World War I to coordinate resources and industries for national defense and improve civilian morale. The Woman's Committee of the Kansas Council of National Defense performed the same functions at the state and local levels, coordinating women's activities for national defense. The materials are organized alphabetically by county. The digitization of this collection was paid for through the Margot R. Swovelan Endowment Fund.

A proceeding of a meeting informs Kansas Governor St. John that the farmers of Hawkeye township in Osborne County have met to devise some means of procuring seed wheat for fall sowing. A separate letter from J. G. Wolford of Bull City, Kansas advising the Governor the condition of things in regard to seed wheat for fall sowing. In the letter J. G. Wolford asks the Governor to furnish them some wheat or to influence parties that can supply them with wheat. Accompanying this letter is a statement showing acreage of wheat town in Osborne county.
