Albin Kasper Longren's photograph album

This photograph album documents a number of airplanes (biplanes)designed, built and flown by Albin Kasper Longren. He built and flew Topeka's first aircraft on September 2, 1911. At two different times, Longren tried to establish an airplane factory in Topeka, Kansas. His second factory was in an abandoned woolen mill in Oakland, a neighborhood in Topeka, Kansas. The album contains photographs of the exterior and interior of this factory and numerous views of planes and plane parts. Longren's planes were well received, but his business failed because he had difficulty manufacturing numbers of planes. There are two images of a plane parked at the entrance to Gage Park in Topeka. Longren did exhibition flying at county fairs and other events in the region under the name Longren Aviators Exhibition Flyers. The album also has images of biplanes at Coffeyville, Anthony, Stockton, and other locations in Kansas as well as at least one image taken in the following states: Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Texas. Longren built a plane the was purchased by Philip Billard, a Topeka aviator, and there are images of this plane in the album.

Aspirin wrapper
Date: between 1941 and 1945
Brown paper wrapper with the word "Aspirin" handwritten on one side. Colonel James C. Hughes acquired the aspirin while being held as a Japanese Prisoner of War during World War II. Born in Topeka, Kansas, in 1888, Hughes served in the Mexican Border Conflict, World War I, and World War II. During the latter conflict, he commanded a Philippine regiment (Filipino soldiers led by American officers), which surrendered in 1942 on the Bataan peninsula. Hughes spent the next 41 months in various Japanese P.O.W. camps. He was liberated by Russian forces at Camp Hoten, Manchuria, in 1945. Hughes died in 1964 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

This black and white photograph shows the chief pilot's seat inside the cockpit of a Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe's reconverted DC-4. The plane was equipped with four Pratt & Whitney engines, each capable of generating 1450 horsepower at takeoff. Radio and flight equipment included automatic direction finder units, two-way high frequency communications and two-way very high frequency communications and two-way very high frequency transmission and receiving units, and auxiliary range receiver used in conjunction with a fixed loop antenna for antistatic purposes and a glide path and runway localizer receivers of high frequency.

Iron rod used on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway on the Cyrus K. Holliday Locomotive #1 (restored ATSF #132.) It was used for packing driving box cellars on the axles of the locomotive.

AT & SF Railway brake club

A wooden brake club was used to turn the brake wheel of a rail car with ease. This club was part of the Charles "Bud" Goebel collection, which was displayed at the Burlingame Santa Fe depot from 1963 until its donation to the Kansas Museum of History in 1981.

Iron model used to teach prospective engineers the operation of a steam locomotive. This was used in the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Shops at Dodge City, Kansas. The model was later collected by Charles "Bud" Goebel, whose collection was house at the Santa Fe depot at Burlingame, Kansas from 1963 to 1981, at which time it was donated to the Kansas Museum of History.

Baby carriage

This baby carriage was made in 1811 for George Geiger from a design drawn by his father, John, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. John Geiger had been apprenticed to a carriage maker as a youth but was a merchant when his son was born. John designed the baby carriage in the style of early 19th century coaches, with a heavy body and a canvas-covered top. Most of the work was done by an carriage maker, but John made the wheels. George Geiger moved to Ohio in 1831, then to Kansas in 1867. He remained in the state until his death in 1885.

Balsamarium

Roman glass double balsamarium. Balsamarium were common household items in the Roman Empire. They were used to hold ointments, powders, and balms. Those made of glass were typically used for liquids, including expensive perfumed oils. Glass was preferred for this because of its non-porous nature. Balsamarium usually had glass or bronze applicators that were used to extract the contents from the vials. The vessels were created using a glass blowing process that developed in the 1st century BC. This balsamarium belonged to William Allen White, the noted newspaper editor from Emporia, Kansas. It is presumed he purchased it on one of his European trips.

Bicycle

Large red steel bicycle with an aluminum basket on the front and a rack attached to the rear. This is a Montgomery Ward Hawthorne bicycle purchased by Hiram Dickson in 1934 for $34. Dickson raised the money from the sale of pigs he had raised for 4-H projects. He used the bicycle to ride to the Admire High School in Kansas. Dickson later married and moved his family to Topeka where his two sons used the bicycle to deliver the Topeka Journal in 1954. Welding on the pedals was done at the Admire Blacksmith Shop.

Bishop car-coupler

The Bishop Car-Coupler was a special steel blade with a wood handle used by railroad brakemen and switchmen for coupling and uncoupling cars with particular couplers. The original patent for this device was obtained by Goodwin O. Bishop of Hannibal, Mo. On December 6, 1881. J.B. Sheehan used this one while he worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad in 1884.

Bottle of turkey red wheat

Glass bottle containing turkey red variety of wheat seed. Charles Goebbel, of Burlingame, Kansas, purchased this bottle in 1974. That year residents of Goessel, Kansas, sold these bottles to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the introduction of turkey red wheat in Kansas. According to legend, German Mennonites emigrating from Russia first planted hard winter wheat in Goessell in 1874. Turkey red proved highly adaptable to the Kansas climate and provided greater yields than any previous variety.

Part of a cardboard box that once held rations sent by the American Red Cross to Prisoners of War. Colonel James C. Hughes acquired this ration box while being held as a Prisoner of War (POW) by the Japanese during World War II.
