Gaius Jenkins
Date: Between 1854 and 1858
An ambrotype showing Gaius Jenkins, who was born in New York state in 1812. He and his wife came to Kansas City, Missouri in 1853, and they moved to Lawrence, Kansas Territory, in 1854. Jenkins was active in the free-state cause, serving as a colonel in the Free State Militia. He was taken prisoner along with John Brown, Jr., Charles Robinson and several others and held near Lecompton, Kansas Territory. On June 3, 1858, Jenkins was killed by James Lane over a land dispute in Lawrence.

James Montgomery

Cased ninth plate ambrotype portrait of James Montgomery, 1814-1871. Montgomery came to Linn County, Kansas Territory, early in the territorial period after living in Ohio, Kentucky and Missouri. He was active in the free state cause and was involved in most of the conflicts between pro-slavery and free state forces in that area. He raised a militia troop that was active in 1857.

John B. Baumberger

This is an ambrotype showing John B. Baumberger who came to Kansas from St. Louis, Missouri. He was born May 3, 1834 and he died in 1892. Baumberger is buried in Washington Cemetery in Washington County, Kansas. Baumberger is the father of Elizabeth Barbara Baumberger Thiele who is the mother of Kansas Supreme Court Justice Walter Thiele.

John Doy and rescue party

This ambrotype shows John Doy and his rescue party. On January 25, 1859, Dr. John Doy and his son, Charles, left Lawrence, Kansas Territory, for Nebraska with thirteen slaves. They were captured twelve miles outside of Lawrence and were taken to Weston, Missouri. The two Doys were arraigned at Weston and were committed to jail at Platte City, Missouri, for the crime of abducting slaves. They remained in jail until March 20, 1859, when they were taken to St. Joseph, Missouri, where Dr. Doy was tried. After the trial, his son, Charles, was set free. The jury could not agree on a verdict for Dr. Doy, however, and he was tried a second time. At the second trial, he was convicted and sentenced to five years in the penitentiary. While being held in the St. Joseph jail, Doy was freed by friends from Kansas Territory on July 23, 1859. People in the ambrotype are: (l to r) Major James B. Abbott, Captain Joshua A. Pike, Jacob Senix, Joseph Gardner, Thomas Simmons, S. J. Willis, Charles Doy, Captain John E. Stuart [Stewart], Silas Soule, George R. Hay and Dr. John Doy (seated in front). The ambrotype was taken at Lawrence, Kansas Territory, in the summer of 1859.

John James Ingalls

A uncased sixth plate ambrotype portrait of John James Ingalls. He came to the Kansas Territory in the late 1850s. Ingalls, a lawyer and politician, represented Atchison County at the Wyandotte Constitutional Convention, July, 1859. In January, 1860 and 1861, he was an officer of the council when the legislature met at Lecompton. At the Republican Convention at Lawrence, April, 1860, Ingalls was elected to represent the Kansas Territory at the Chicago National Convention. He later served in the Kansas and the United States Senate.
