Cyrus Kurtz and Mary Holliday

This is a daguerreotype portrait of Cyrus Kurtz and Mary Holliday. Cyrus was one of the original founders of Topeka, Kansas, served Kansas as Adjutant General during the Civil War, and later as a State Senator. He owned the "Topeka Tribune" and was also a member of the Board of Regents. Holliday was the first president of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway and served on its board of directors for thirty-seven years.

Cyrus Kurtz Holliday

A formal portrait of Cyrus Kurtz Holliday (1826-1900), of Topeka, Kansas. Holliday came to Kansas Territory in 1854 from Meadville, Pennsylvania. He was an agent for the New England Emigrant Aid Company, one of the founders of Topeka, and was the first president of the Topeka Town Association. He was very active in territorial political activities, including the Topeka movement, he was a delegate to the Topeka Constitutional Convention, and served in the Kansas State Senate in 1861. Holliday was also the first president of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, and served as one of the railroad's directors for nearly 40 years.

David Rice Atchison

Half plate daguerreotype portrait of David R. Atchison by Jessie H. Whitehurst, probably made in St. Louis, Missouri. David Rice Atchison was a pro-slavery leader from Missouri. He represented Missouri in the U.S. Senate from 1843 to 1855. He was involved in various aspects of the territorial conflict and allegedly rode with the raiders who sacked Lawrence, Kansas Territory, in 1856. The town of Atchison, and Atchison County, were named for him.

Edward Payson Fitch

Cased ninth plate daguerreotype portrait of Edward Payson Fitch, a native of Massachusetts, who arrived in Kansas Territory in 1854 as a member of the third group of settlers sponsored by the New England Emigrant Aid Company. On August 21, 1863, he was killed in his house by one of William Quantrill's raiders during their infamous attack on Lawrence. The daguerreotype was made by Clark's Daguerreotype Rooms of No. 59 Court Street, Boston, Massachusetts.

Free-State emigrants' battery
Date: 1856
This daguerreotype shows one of the cannons brought by a company to Topeka, Kansas Territory, in 1856. During 1856, the pro-slavery people of Missouri virtually cut off free-state emigration to Kansas Territory by the way of the Missouri River. Numerous emigrant parties were intercepted and turned back. This circumstance led to an organized emigration to Kansas Territory overland through Iowa. Parties came in organized companies and were generally armed. These arms were furnished largely through organized movements in the Eastern states from which the emigrants came. In a number of instances, cannons were brought by these emigrant parties. It is also possible that this cannon is the famous "Old Sacramento", the cannon that was captured by Alexander Doniphan in the Mexican American War. It was brought back to Missouri and taken from the Liberty Arsenal by pro-slavery men and brought into Kansas Territory, where it was then captured by Free State men at the Second Battle of Franklin on August 12, 1856.

George Washington Martin

This photograph, a copy from a daguerreotype, shows George Washington Martin, 1841-1914. Martin migrated to the Kansas Territory in 1857 from Pennsylvania settling in Lecompton, Kansas where he worked with the pro-slavery paper the Lecompton Union, later becoming the National Democrat. Martin continued to establish himself as a newspaper editor and publisher founding the Junction City Union. Actively involved in the community, Martin held several public offices from mayor of Junction City to serving in the Kansas House of Representatives. In 1888 he moved to Kansas City, Kansas, establishing the Daily Gazette newspaper. Martin was the managing editor of the newspaper until 1899 when he is elected secretary of the Kansas Historical Society (KSHS). Martin held this position for fifteen years and was appointed secretary emeritus of KSHS in February 1914. He passed away on March 27, 1914 in Topeka, Kansas.
