This file includes general correspondence relating to the abandonment of Lucy Sharpe Brooks by her husband. The first letter by Lucy Sharpe Brooks is reiterating her desire for justice of her husband after he married her and then left with her money, leaving her homeless and penniless. She is writing to Governor Capper after receiving no response from the previous Governor, George H. Hodges (1866-1947). The second letter is the Governor's office acknowledging the letter but saying the State has nothing to do with domestic matters such as Lucy Sharpe Brooks is writing about.

Andrew Henry and Mary Gudenkauf Zind Henry

This is a photograph showing Andrew A. Henry and Mary Gudenkauf Zind Henry on their wedding day. Andrew A. Henry was born in Bavaria, Germany on December 31, 1860, and his parents were George Heinrich Henry and Eliza (Iva) Dougle Henry. Andrew immigrated to the United States in 1881 at the age of 21 and settled in Kingman County, Kansas. He worked for the railway company in Kingman for a few years before coming to Nemaha County in 1893 where he settled on a farm near Goff, Kansas. In 1896, he married Mary Gudenkauf Zind at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Seneca, Kansas. They had six children Frank, Antone, Leo, Catherine, Joseph, Bernard and Clemens Zind, Mary's son from a previous marriage. On September 18, 1910, Mary died of peritonitis. On January 21, 1914, Henry married Josephine Dreier and they had one son Vincent. In 1924, Andrew and Josephine moved from the farm to a home in Seneca, Kansas. Andrew Henry passed away December 12, 1947. Mary Gudenkauf Zind was born November 14, 1869 in Minster, Auglaize County, Ohio and her parents were Henry Clemens and Maria Catherine Barhorst Gudenkauf. Mary's parents moved to Seneca, Kansas in 1886 after their flour mill was destroyed by a fire. In 1890, Mary married Antone Zind, and they had two children Margarite (who died at the age of 2) and Clemens. Antone Zind died in an accident on a farm just east of Seneca on August 29, 1893, at age 31.

Andrew Jackson Huntoon correspondence

Andrew Jackson Huntoon was a physician who came to Kansas in 1857, settling south of Topeka in Williamsport, Shawnee County. In 1861 he enlisted with the 5th Kansas Cavalry volunteer regiment, serving as assistant surgeon and surgeon of that group, seeing service along the Missouri border and in Arkansas. After mustering out he settled in Topeka, where he died in 1902. This collection consists primarily of letters to or from Lizzie, Huntoon's friend and later wife. Arma mining camp, Crawford County, Kansas

Photographs and postcards of the mining camp, businesses, community interests, residents, and buildings in Arma, Kansas. The city of Arma was incorporated in 1909 and is located in Crawford County about nine miles north of Pittsburg. Previously the area was known as Rust, a small coal camp laid out in 1886. The town was inhabited by miners from many of the surrounding mines. Arma continues today and is home to a few businesses, a grade school and a high school.

Broken Star quilt

Blue, white and pink cotton quilt in Broken Star pattern, with close and fine quilting overall. The binding is marked with the initials "M E T" on the back. According to the donor, the quilt belonged to her uncle's parents, Eugene and Annie Elizabeth Carmichael Metzger. They were married in Missouri in 1880 and moved to Hunter, Mitchell County, Kansas and then later to Lane, Franklin County, Kansas. The quilt may have been part of Annie Metzger's hope chest.
