Abraham Coffman family in Topeka, Kansas

This photograph from 1923 shows members of the Abraham Coffman family posing with the family automobile. Included are Abraham, his wife Lilly Mae, and their children Ted, twins Loyd and Floyd, Leavern, and Hazel. Coffman was a painter in Topeka, Kansas. Not pictured in the photo are the three youngest children, Ed, Abraham Jr., and Kenneth. The boys in the family would later become involved, to varying extents, in Topeka's baseball community. The Coffman name was especially associated with the Topeka Decker Oilers, a successful semi-pro baseball team in the late 1940s and 1950s. Vern Coffman was the team's manager, Ed was an outfielder, and Junior (Abraham, Jr.) was a mainstay in the pitching staff. Vern's sons, Harland and Burton, also played on the team. Digital reproduction of the photograph was accomplished through a joint project sponsored by the Kansas Historical Society and the Shawnee County Baseball Hall of Fame.

Tod Ranch near Maple Hill, Kansas, from October,1915 to June,1916. While working on the ranch, Harry wrote letters and postcards describing his experiences. Agreement with the Lapland Exhibit Company

This is an exclusive contract between Niels Bull, his wife Margarita Bull, their six year old son Morten Bull of Singsaas, Herred, Norway, and the Lapland Exhibit Company of Chicago, Illinois, by P. H. Coney, President and Superintendent, and Emil Arner, Vice-President and Manager. The Bull family agrees to work, exhibit, and perform in native costume at the World's Columbian Exposition at Chicago, Illinois or elsewhere in the United States of American for the Lapland Exhibit Company. Their family pay rate was 12 kroners per day. The contract was canceled October 31, 1893. Patrick H. Coney, a Topeka native, was the Exposition's manager. It was used as an advertising item for the Palace Clothing Company for a raincoat sale being held in the Arts Building of the Topeka Fair Grounds. It is an example of the racial stereotypes and prejudice that was commonplace in American culture.
